River Cottage

A 15-minute drive from Home Farm Hotel is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s famous River Cottage. Based at Park Farm near Axminster, River Cottage HQ is a base for running courses and events. Ranging from a night’s dining and entertainment, through to courses in foraging, curing, gardening, bread-making, butchery and more.


Paignton Zoo

A great family day out. Visiting deserts, frozen poles, savannah and the rain forest in just a few hours is possible at Paignton Zoo. You can take part in feeding the animals as well as other events. Try Flamingo Ball, Kamikaze Duck Race, Crocodile Craziness, and others.


National Marine Aquarium

Located in Plymouth, the Aquarium has got so much to see. There are huge tanks full of exciting fish (and sharks!), turtles and other sea creatures. There are exhibitions where you can find out about the beautiful life in the sea.

Exeter Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of St Peter, Exeter Cathedral is open from 9.30 am until 5 pm. You will receive a leaflet describing the layout of the Cathedral at the entrance. This year they also welcome back their famous Christmas Market. It runs from Friday November to Saturday 17th December in 2022 and is held in the cathedral grounds.


The Donkey Sanctuary

Visit the Donkey Sanctuary for a little peace and tranquillity. They have taken into care over 7400 donkeys – many rescued after being cruelly treated or neglected. The Donkey Sanctuary is the largest in the world dealing specifically with donkeys and mules. A donkey is never refused admission to the Sanctuary, and all are guaranteed loving care for the rest of their natural lives.

Axe Valley Wildlife Park

Situated in the beautiful countryside of the Axe Valley, just a short distance from the Jurassic Coast, is this small, friendly farm. This great day out for families ensures that children of all size (big kids too!) will find something they love. Whether that’s hand feeding the free-range birds, handling a snake or a tarantula or meeting the armadillo, zebra, lemur or flamingos to name just a few!


Beer Quarry Caves

Take a trip back in time and view the vast man-made complex of underground caverns. With their mighty halls of vaulted roofs and pillars of Beer Stone which have been likened to a vast underground cathedral.

See for yourself the methods used to quarry and deliver the enormous blocks of stone. View the working conditions, the hardships endured and the dangers faced daily by the work-force. All using only the light from a flickering tallow candle. You may never again see a famous building with the same eyes.

The caves are cool, so please bring warm clothing, and it’s best to arrive at least 10 mins before the tours start. There is no need to book unless you are a large party.

Wiscombe Hill Climb Venue

Events throughout the year, Wiscombe Park is a superb hill climb venue situated in a steep wooded valley, just south of Honiton in Devon. So just round the corner from Home Farm Hotel!

The course, which is 1000 yards (914 metres) in length, was opened over 60 years ago and runs national and club motor-sport events throughout the year.  A typical event sees a wide range of 2, 3 and 4 wheel machinery competing against the clock - always with competition in a friendly spirit.


Allhallows Museum of Lace and Antiquities

In the town famous for lace making, Allhallows Museum has one of the most comprehensive collections of Honiton Lace in the world. Displays in two galleries feature exquisite examples of 16th to early 20th century Honiton lace. There are displays covering a huge range of local history topics including the Honiton hippo, metal detecting, wartime memorabilia, highly collectable Honiton Pottery, and a Victorian dolls house. The museum is packed with information and activities for all ages and interests. There are activities to amuse the children - a choice of four (free) children's quiz sheets are available, with a guaranteed prize on completion, plus, puzzles and an opportunity for everyone to try lace making. Honiton lace making demonstrations are held by volunteers on Mondays to Fridays throughout June, July and August.


Events Throughout The Year

As well as the Places of Interest near Honiton Devon listed above, each year there are a number of annual events near by. Some of these have been affected over the last 2 years but are looking to be back to full strength this year.


As this year is the platinum jubilee there will be countless events across the country and Devon will be no different. There will the lighting of Jubilee Beacons on the 2nd June at various points in Torbay and Brixham. Street parties in Exeter and Sidmouth, festivals in Exmouth and Topsham to mention just a few. Let's hope the weather holds out for, what looks like it will be, a bumper celebration weekend.

Axe Vale Show

The Axe Vale show is designed to showcase the very best Axminster and the surrounding area has to offer, with the emphasis very much on participation and community involvement. Held over both days of the weekend 18th and 19th June 2022 there is a full programme of displays, entertainment and shopping. There's something for everybody at the Axe Vale Show! Sidmouth Folk Festival

Sidmouth folk festival is a major cultural institution held every year in the first week of August since 1955 attracting tens of thousands of visitors

A champion of folk traditions – with over 700 diverse events with a wide-ranging ‘something for everyone’ appeal.

This year they are celebrating their 68th year. There will be a full festival this year following the last two years restrictions. The festival runs from 29th July to 5th August 2022.



Devon County Show

The Devon County Show is one of the most significant events in the county calendar and is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing day out sampling the many wonders of the local countryside. This year it will take place on Thursday 30th June, Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd July.  The event traditionally runs during the third week of May, but along with other shows was cancelled in 2020 and delayed to July in 2021. It will take place at Westpoint Showground in Exeter. Tickets and further information can be found at the link below.
